Dr. Golfo Alexopoulos is founding director of the USF Institute on Russia and professor of Global Studies at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Her teaching and research focus on Russian politics and society. Her recent book, Illness and Inhumanity in Stalin’s Gulag, was published in 2017 by Yale University Press. She has published widely in academic journals on issues related to the history of medicine, genocide and human rights, as well as political violence and repression in authoritarian states. Dr. Alexopoulos received her PhD in Russian and Soviet history from the University of Chicago and her master’s in Russian studies at Yale University. She has been awarded fellowships from the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard, the Hoover Institution at Stanford, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
